How it works

Shell Drill (3-on-3 Defense): Set up 3 offensive players: one at the top of the key, one at each wing. Set up 3 defenders in correct help positions: ball defender on the ball, one pass away in deny, two passes away in help.

  1. Set up 3 offensive players: one at the top of the key, one at each wing.
  2. Set up 3 defenders in correct help positions: ball defender on the ball, one pass away in deny, two passes away in help.
  3. Offense passes the ball around — defense adjusts positions on each pass.
  4. No drives allowed in phase 1 — focus on defensive communication and rotation.
  5. Phase 2: offense may drive — defense rotates (help comes from the weak side).
  6. Switch offense/defense every 4 minutes.

Coaching tips

The defensive call on every pass: "Ball!", "Deny!", or "Help!". Every defender must be talking on every possession. Help defense wins championships.
